What Is a Whole-Home Standby Generator?
A standby generator is a permanently installed unit that sits beside your home, connected to your electrical panel through an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When utility power goes out, the generator senses it within seconds, starts automatically, and transfers your home to generator power, all without you doing anything.
Unlike a portable generator that you haul out of a garage and plug in with extension cords, a standby unit runs your whole house, AC, refrigerator, water heater, lights, and everything else, just like normal power.
In Florida, where a Category 3 storm can knock out power for a week, that difference matters a lot.

Who Needs One
- Anyone in a hurricane zone (which is most of Florida)
- Homeowners with medical equipment that requires power
- Families with young children or elderly residents
- People with a sump pump, well pump, or pool system
- Anyone who works from home and can't afford downtime
- Homeowners who have lost food or property damage in past outages
How the Installation Process Works
Site Assessment & Load Calculation
We visit your home, measure your electrical load, assess the fuel supply (gas meter or LP tank location), and recommend the right generator size.
Permit Application
We pull all required permits with your county. In Palm Beach County and Brevard County, this typically takes one to two weeks.
Installation Day
We set the generator on a concrete pad, connect the transfer switch to your panel, run the gas line, and wire everything to code. Most jobs are done in a day.
Inspection & Commissioning
The county inspector signs off on the work. We commission the generator, walk you through the controls, and set up the automatic exercise schedule.
What Affects the Cost of a Generator Installation?
Generator installation costs vary widely, and anyone who quotes you a firm price without seeing your home is guessing. The main factors that drive the number:
Generator Size
A 10 kW Generac costs less than a 22 kW. We size based on your actual load, bigger isn't always better.
Transfer Switch Type
A load-center transfer switch (whole-panel) costs more than a standalone ATS. Both are safe, the choice depends on your home.
Panel Condition
If your panel is old, undersized, or needs a main breaker upgrade before the generator can be added, that adds to the job scope.
Fuel Source & Line Distance
How far the generator sits from your gas meter or LP tank affects the gas line cost. Longer runs cost more.
Pad & Site Prep
A concrete pad is required. Tight access, landscaping in the way, or an unusually long run from the panel all add labor.
Permit Fees
County permit fees are passed through at cost. These vary by county, Palm Beach County and Brevard County have different schedules.

Generator Installation in West Palm Beach & Palm Bay
In Palm Beach County, generator installations require a permit through the county building department. The application process typically takes one to two weeks from submission to approval, though backlogs after major storm seasons can extend that timeline. We prepare and submit all permit documentation on your behalf, you don't need to go to the building department or track down inspection schedules.
If your home is served by FPL (Florida Power & Light), some installations also require coordination with FPL for a meter base upgrade or a revised service entrance. We're familiar with FPL's process and handle that coordination directly so your installation doesn't stall waiting on the utility.
In Brevard County, permits are issued through the Brevard County Building Division. The requirements are similar but the inspection schedule is managed separately. Our Palm Bay team handles Brevard County permitting regularly and knows the local inspectors and timelines. Whether you're in Palm Bay, Melbourne, or Rockledge, we pull the permit, coordinate the inspection, and get you to commissioning without delays.

Standby Generator vs. Portable Generator
Both provide backup power, but they work very differently. Here's a direct comparison.
| Feature | Standby Generator | Portable Generator |
|---|---|---|
| Power method | Permanently wired to your panel via an automatic transfer switch | Extension cords or manual transfer switch, requires manual setup |
| Startup | Automatic, starts within seconds of an outage, no action needed | Manual, you must be home, pull it out, and start it yourself |
| Fuel | Natural gas or LP, unlimited runtime as long as fuel is supplied | Gasoline, runtime limited by tank size, fuel hard to find after storms |
| Coverage | Whole home, AC, water heater, every circuit | Partial, powers a few appliances via cords |
| Code compliance | Permitted and inspected, fully code-compliant installation | No permit needed, but improper use causes CO poisoning deaths every year |
| Cost | Higher upfront; no ongoing fuel cost on natural gas | Lower upfront; ongoing fuel cost and storage requirements |
